Art has been a part of my life since my childhood in Oklahoma . I enjoy sketching and painting people and places around our community and on vacation trips. My education in architecture at Oklahoma State University in the early ‘60's included art classes in sketching and watercolor. Sketching and painting became a part of architectural practice as well as a hobby, evolving into an avocation in recent years. Occasionally, I have taught pencil sketching and basic watercolor for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in Columbia, Missouri, and watercolor workshops for the Columbia Art League. Once again this spring semester, I will be teaching six sessions of sketching and watercolor at OLLI.
Watercolor painting for me is a way to express the visible world in a spontaneous fashion that may not be photorealistic but is believable and exciting to view. My method of painting is the more traditional “transparent” method, allowing the white paper to show through for the light values and avoiding opaque media in the painting. My architectural education and background have influenced my watercolor paintings of buildings and other structures, enhancing the drawing and painting by showing shade, shadows, and perspective. Likewise, art has provided a means of illustrating my architectural designs.
Plein air or on-site painting with a creative group of artists called the “Columbia Palette” on a weekly basis has provided me with an incentive to paint better and more frequently. Original watercolors, sketches, and open edition offset color art prints of my work may be viewed by selecting from the menu above.
This website will be updated occasionally to present some of my recent paintings and sketches. You may send your critiques and questions to my email address: jdthompson@socket.net .
Enjoy the visit!
